This course focuses on the development of English language skills, starting with the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills that are directly related to immediate personal and social needs. The course progresses to include a range of more complex communication skills and knowledge in English and consolidates with advanced English language speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. The purpose of this qualification is preparation for participation in further English language study or vocational training which may include English language support, or employment.

The purpose of the course is to provide a General English course for students at the Beginners, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate levels. The course is designed to allow flexible entry and exit points in line with students’ English language proficiency levels.

Course duration can be anywhere from 5 to 50 academic weeks + Breaks at all level from Elementary to Upper Intermediate level.

You will receive on-going feedback on your progress through weekly assessments from your class teachers. Progress tests are held every ten weeks throughout the course.

General English will help you develop and improve your English skills for everyday situations including:

  • general communication skills
  • confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing English through tasks relevant to your interests
  • accuracy in speaking and writing through extending your knowledge of English grammar and pronunciation
  • an understanding of Australian society and culture through activities in the classroom and excursions to places of interest.

The mode of delivery is face-to-face teaching, 20 hours per week. Students benefit from explicit modelling and practice at all levels of the course starting with high frequency words, grammatical structures and formulaic expressions moving on to less common vocabulary and abstract thoughts and concepts. A focus on pronunciation is integrated throughout the levels. To supplement this, students will be encouraged to pursue opportunities to practice their English outside of class hours and to do a range of self-study learning activities.
